Volunteer Stories – Learning About Our Visitors

Conservation Education Department Volunteer Tom Detmer of Madison, Wisconsin, was an attorney in the Madison area for many years. He also was a board member of the Madison Audubon Society, where he learned about the International Crane Foundation and met Co-Founder Ron Sauey.

Ron invited Tom on birding trips. The pair also toured our headquarters’ original location at Ron’s family farm. After retiring and talking to a fellow volunteer, Tom began giving tours as a roving naturalist in 2016. He particularly enjoys being a roving naturalist because he can have one-on-one conversations with guests. Tom also loves volunteering throughout the year to see how the prairie changes between each visit.
