Cranes Bring Best Wishes for 2021

As important symbols of longevity, happiness and nobility, Cranes present a beautiful image in Chinese culture and are often associated with blessings and good wishes. Therefore, the International Crane Foundation’s China Program initiated an online campaign during the 2021 Spring Festival under the program “One Yangtze River With Thousands of Cranes,” supported by Huatai Securities. The Yangtze River basin supports several species of wintering cranes, including nearly the entire population of the critically endangered Siberian Crane.
We designed five digital New Year cards with five species of cranes corresponding to five kinds of beautiful visions. Well-wishers were encouraged to send the cards to their friends and families for the New Year. A QR code is included on the cards, which can be scanned to watch videos about each species. Ding Zhen became famous in November 2020 through a series of photos showing his charming and simple smile and is now working for the tourist publicity of his hometown, Litang in Sichuan province, where Black-necked Cranes summer. Ding Zhen introduced the meaningful wishes with the five cranes in a short video and invited everyone to send wishes with the cards and protect and care for these elegant cranes.
The five crane videos and cards were viewed more than 400,000 times on all our Chinese social media platforms. Comments were positive and encouraging. We aim to break the barrier between the public and animal protection, so that general audiences learn more about crane conservation through our work.
