Celebrating World Environment Day 2026 in Zambia

Share

Every year on 5 June, the world comes together to celebrate World Environment Day, the largest global platform for environmental awareness and action. The 2026 global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” highlights the urgent need to tackle climate change through nature-based solutions that protect ecosystems while building a sustainable future for generations to come.

In Zambia, the International Crane Foundation, with the support of Elephant Charge, joined the nation in commemorating World Environment Day through two impactful events that brought together government institutions, conservation partners, schools, and local communities to promote environmental stewardship and climate action.

Throughout the World Environment Day event, representatives from various government ministries and environmental organizations delivered presentations highlighting innovative approaches to climate action, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable development. The commemoration served as a powerful reminder that safeguarding nature is fundamental to achieving green growth and securing a resilient future for Zambia.

On 5th June 2026, the International Crane Foundation partnered with the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment and other stakeholders to commemorate World Environment Day at Lusaka National Park in Lusaka under the national theme, “Accelerating Zambia’s Climate Action for Green Growth and Sustainability.”

The event was officiated by the Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Joel Kalusa, who underscored the importance of collective action in addressing climate change and its far-reaching social and economic impacts. He called upon government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, and citizens to work together to protect Zambia’s natural resources and build climate resilience.

As part of its continued World Environment Day activities, the International Crane Foundation, in partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), hosted a second commemoration on 12 June 2026 at Blue Lagoon National Park in the Kafue Flats.

The event welcomed 35 pupils from Muchabi Primary School and Shacele Secondary School, providing young learners with an engaging opportunity to connect with nature while deepening their understanding of environmental conservation.

The International Crane Foundation’s Community Relations Manager, David Banda, highlighted the ecological importance of Blue Lagoon National Park, emphasizing its rich biodiversity and the vital role it plays in supporting wildlife, local livelihoods, and ecosystem health.

The pupils enthusiastically participated by presenting songs and poems centred on environmental conservation, demonstrating their creativity and growing commitment to protecting nature. These performances reinforced the message that environmental awareness can be effectively nurtured through education and youth engagement.

Adding to the day’s learning experience, the Field Ecologist from the International Crane Foundation introduced the pupils to bird identification techniques and explained the ecological importance of the park’s bird species. The session also highlighted the harmful impacts of invasive mimosa plants, which threaten bird habitats, reduce biodiversity, and disrupt the health of the Kafue Flats ecosystem.

The dual commemorations reflected the International Crane Foundation’s commitment to promoting environmental education, strengthening partnerships, and empowering communities to become active custodians of Zambia’s natural heritage.

By engaging policymakers, conservation practitioners, educators, and young people, the Foundation continues to demonstrate that meaningful climate action begins with informed communities and healthy ecosystems. Through collaboration, education, and conservation, the International Crane Foundation is helping inspire a future where both people and nature can thrive.

As the world faces increasing environmental challenges, World Environment Day serves as a timely reminder that protecting nature is not only essential for biodiversity but also one of the most effective solutions for combating climate change. Together, we can be inspired by nature to create a healthier, greener, and more sustainable future for all.
