This month marks the one-year anniversary of the pandemic shutdown in the U.S. and the tumultuous year that followed. It is hard for any of us to imagine a more challenging time. But as I reflect on the past year, I am struck most of all by the great things we achieved together.

It’s not goodbye…Grey Crowned Crane Slidell Moves to Brookfield Zoo
In December 2020, our aviculture staff completed their first animal transfer since the beginning of Covid-19. Discussions began at the beginning of the year to identify a new home for Slidell, a 19-year-old Grey Crowned Crane that many visitors to our headquarters have come to love over the years.
Improving Community Livelihoods and Protecting Grey Crowned Cranes in Rwanda
One of our key projects in Rwanda focuses not directly on cranes but Napier Grass. We are working with local farmer groups to plant the grass and in turn reduce harvesting from Rugezi Marsh, home to a growing population of Grey Crowed Cranes.
A Friend Indeed
Through the generous support of the Leiden Conservation Foundation, the Kenyan team was able to procure face masks, handwash and soap bars that we distributed to the households of individuals we signed Conservation Agreement with, and custodians outside the Conservation Agreement process.
