Calgary, Alberta – September 26, 2024 – The International Crane Foundation is pleased to announce it has again earned accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the accrediting body for the top zoos and aquariums in the United States and 12 other countries.
“Since its inception more than fifty years ago, the International Crane Foundation has remained dedicated to the highest standards of care for the cranes in our flock, as well as a safe and engaging space for visitors to learn about the world’s 15 species of cranes,” said Dr. Rich Beilfuss, President and CEO of the Foundation.
Evaluation for AZA accreditation includes a detailed application and a meticulous multiple-day on-site inspection by an independent team of zoological professionals. The inspecting team analyzes all aspects of the facility’s operation, including animal care and wellbeing; veterinary care; staff training; safety for visitors, staff, and animals; educational programs; conservation efforts; financial stability; risk management; governance; and guest services.
“We are incredibly proud of our headquarters staff for their continued work in providing the highest standards in animal welfare, care, and management, along with visitor safety and experience,” Beilfuss added. “This prestigious accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) speaks to our high standards. It’s an honor to once again be accredited by the AZA.”
Twice a year, the AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission reviews accreditation applications from the best zoos, aquariums, and related facilities in the world. At this year’s Annual Conference held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, from September 14-19, the Commission reviewed 34 facility applications. Of those, 33 facilities were granted accreditation, and one was denied.
