We are teaming up again with the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge—and new in 2026, the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge—to lead our popular monthly Whooping Crane Walks this spring through fall in Wisconsin! See the complete listing of dates below. The walks begin at 9 a.m. CT and last approximately one hour. Participants may stay longer at the refuges to explore on their own after the guided walk.

  • Horicon National Wildlife Refuge (see location details below): May 14, June 11, July 9, August 13, September 10, and October 8
  • Necedah National Wildlife Refuge (N11385 Headquarters Road, Necedah, Wisconsin): April 22, May 20, June 17, July 15, August 19, September 16, and October 21

For the Horicon refuge walks in Mayville, Wis., the route is 0.7 miles total on a boardwalk and trail with some shade. The group will meet at the parking lot near the Egret Trail floating boardwalk. There is a pit toilet near the parking area.

At the Necedah refuge, the planned route is two miles total (one mile out and back) on a gravel road with no shade, with the option to add an extra .25 miles if participants are interested. Please meet at the refuge visitor center by the flagpoles. Bathrooms are available, although the visitor center may be closed.
