"Sedge meadows are Sandhill Cranes' favored habitat. In sedge meadows, groundwater periodically percolates up through the soil and collects in low areas. These meadows are populated by plant species that can grow in standing water alternated with dry land. Along with sedges and grasses, the Silvery Checkerspot Butterfly and Jewel-weed are commonly found in such environments." – Kim Russell
