Stand Up for Cranes

Dear Wisconsin Craniacs:
We need your help.
For the third time in 14 years, the Wisconsin Legislature is attempting to mandate the state’s Department of Natural Resources to create a Sandhill Crane hunting season. The International Crane Foundation is disappointed by the legislature’s continued attempts to tie crop damage relief for farmers to a Sandhill Crane hunt, a widely unpopular proposal for the people of the state. Though there is no evidence that a hunt will provide relief to farmers experiencing crop damage by cranes. And there are other, more effective ways we can support farmers experiencing these issues.
Here’s what you can do: We encourage you to consider contacting your state legislators in the Assembly and the Senate. Let them know that you support meaningful funding for Wisconsin farmers that’s not tied to a potentially harmful and divisive hunting season. Here’s how:
Find Your Legislators: You can find your elected officials by entering your address here. Look for your Wisconsin State Representative and Senator.
Draft Your Message: Have your message prepared, whether you plan to send an email or a letter, call your legislator’s office, or schedule an in-person meeting. See below for an example letter.
Deliver Your Message: Using the contact information from the first step, deliver your message to your elected official.
Recruit a Fellow Craniac: Tell your friends and fellow craniacs to contact their legislators, too! The more people the legislators hear from, the more successful we can be—together!
Since our founding more than 52 years ago, the Foundation has been devoted to the science-based conservation of cranes and the wetland and grassland habitats upon which they rely. As next steps are taken regarding these issues in Wisconsin, we remain committed to these central tenets of our mission.
We sincerely thank you for your continued support of cranes.

Here’s an example letter to get you started:
Dear Representative or Senator:
My name is [NAME], and I am a constituent in your district. I am writing today to express my concern regarding the legislature’s ongoing efforts to mandate the state’s Department of Natural Resources to create a hunting season on Sandhill Cranes. I believe that farmer relief for crop damage and a hunting season are two separate issues and should be treated as such.
As heard during the Legislative Study Committee on Sandhill Cranes last year, there is no evidence that a hunt will have positive impacts for farmers. Further, I am greatly concerned about the potential impacts of hunting Sandhill Cranes on their breeding grounds, as well as the potential for Endangered Whooping Cranes to be killed in the process.
I urge you to vote against measures that involve a hunting season on Sandhill Cranes and vote to support farmers with meaningful funding, such as that proposed by Governor Evers in his executive budget proposal.
Sincerely,
[Name]
