Ways to help Whooping Cranes

Whooping Cranes are an integral part of Indiana’s ecosystems. Hoosiers can have a big impact on these cranes, so here are the five most important things you can do to help save the Whooping Crane!

·       Spread the word! –  Talk to your friends and family about Whooping Cranes and follow and share crane-related content on social media. By raising awareness about the species, we can help minimize threats like poaching and disturbance.

·       Advocate for wetland protections! –  One of the BEST ways to support Whoopers is to advocate for wetland conservation. Historically, Indiana has lost 85% of its wetlands, which humans and wildlife alike depend on. Recent changes to state-level protections for wetlands increase the risk of losing wetland acreage.

·       Advocate for crane-friendly power lines! – Contact your local energy provider to encourage them to mark power lines with flight diverters, small devices that prevent collisions in high-risk areas.

·       Join our citizen science! If you see a Whooping Crane, report the sighting at www.bandedcranes.org, our long-term monitoring database

·       Support our work! You can also get involved by becoming a volunteer.
