Whooping Crane Status Downlisting Proposal?

On December 13, 2021, a media article was released on the potential downlisting by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) of the Whooping Crane from Endangered to Threatened status under the Endangered Species Act. The information announcing the proposed rule was sent to the press by the Center for Biological Diversity. This was not an official announcement by the USFWS. This action is currently being reviewed by USFWS leadership. If the proposed change of status for the Whooping Crane is moved forward, the proposal will appear in the Federal Register for public comment in the coming months.

The International Crane Foundation is very concerned about this proposal if it moves forward. We are monitoring the situation closely and preparing next steps. We will keep everyone informed as the process moves forward. Whooping Cranes are an iconic conservation story that we care deeply about. We have invested time and money over 30 years of reintroduction efforts, as well as ten years of research and monitoring of wild Whooping Cranes along the Texas coast on their wintering grounds. The future success of the Whooping Crane in North America is one of our highest priorities as a conservation organization.
