Vice President – Asia Programs
The International Crane Foundation works worldwide to conserve cranes and the ecosystems, watersheds, and flyways on which they depend. The foundation engages with a global network of nearly 300 staff, associates, and colleagues in more than 50 countries. Our efforts focus on three priority regions where endangered cranes occur – Asia, Africa, and North America – and our headquarters in Wisconsin, USA.
The International Crane Foundation is currently seeking a senior-level professional to advance our regional programs in East and Southeast Asia and supervise and support our regional leaders. The Vice President-Asia Programs (VP-Asia) will be a core member of the foundation’s Executive Team, guiding strategic and corporate development, with particular reference to our Asia program. This position requires extensive travel and work in these countries for up to six months a year. Meeting the schedule of our partners in these countries requires flexibility to travel on short notice. International conservation experience is essential, with a strong preference for work in Asia.
The location of the incumbent is flexible, preference is in Asia or with travel access to Asia.
The VP-Asia provides strategic leadership and oversight for International Crane Foundation programs in Asia and provides expertise and experience in developing and strengthening collaborative partnerships, programs and relationships within and between countries of the region to promote the conservation of cranes and their habitats, including the wetlands, grasslands and agricultural lands on which they depend, and the flyways they traverse between breeding, staging and wintering grounds. The VP-Asia supervises and supports the International Crane Foundation China Program, guides long-term foundation-supported projects in Russia, Mongolia, and South Korea, and liaises with partners in Japan. The VP-Asia also supervises and supports programs in Southeast Asia, principally Myanmar and Cambodia/Vietnam, and builds and supports networks throughout Asia, Australia and Eurasia/Middle East. The incumbent engages with the International Crane Foundation Senior Leadership and Board of Directors in setting institutional priorities and goals, with particular emphasis on promoting strong linkages and lesson sharing between programs in Asia and regional programs in Africa and North America. In all efforts, the incumbent promotes a science-based approach to organizational decision-making and works with Asia staff to ensure effective communications to the Board of Directors, staff, members, supporters, peers, and other constituencies.
- Advise the CEO, Senior Leadership, and Board of Directors on the strategic vision and direction for the Asia Program.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and management support to International Crane Foundation programs in Asia, including strategic planning, partnership development, monitoring and evaluation and financial and programmatic sustainability.
- Supervise and support the Director of the foundation’s China Program, the Director of the Southeast Asia Program, and the Grants Officer-Asia Programs, including budget development and management, work plans, measurable objectives, personnel needs, professional development, and performance reviews.
- Provide financial and budget oversight of the Asia program and support fundraising efforts in coordination with the Grants Officer-Asia Programs, Development team, Senior Leadership, and Board of Directors.
- Work closely with VP-North America and VP-Africa to coordinate scientific exchange and lesson sharing among the foundation’s global programs.
- Promote sound science in decision-making across International Crane Foundation program activity in Asia.
- Regular travel in Asia for in-person connection with teams, programs and partners.
- Additional travel to international meetings, selected donors and partners, and peer organizations outside Asia.
- Assist Marketing and Communications and Development teams with messaging related to Asia programs and impacts.
- Build and maintain strong networks across the region and represent the International Crane Foundation in relevant forums and meetings.

- Master’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Knowledge and experience working in diverse countries and cultures in Asia, including a clear commitment to cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity, respect for others and different ways of thinking.
- Minimum 10 years working in conservation or a related field, preferably in Asia, with proven track record managing projects and teams.
- Demonstrated experience and commitment to mentoring and supervising others to achieve desired results, including training and encouragement of skill development. Adept at assessing and providing feedback on individual and group performance.
- Excellent verbal communication skills in English, including speaking clearly and persuasively to individuals and groups; listening effectively; responding well to questions from conservation colleagues, International Crane Foundation supporters, visitors, press and the public.
- Demonstrated strong written communications skills in English, including grants, popular articles, project updates, and reports.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively across our international programs, to our headquarters, and to other key locations for networking, meetings, and other opportunities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
